Is there noise in the channel? This can be physical noise (music, environmental sounds, etc.), language, or contextual noise. Is there any unfinished business between the speakers? Are there other issues that should be addressed first? Are there basic misconceptions that must be negotiated? Are there other distractions that take your attention away from the conversation?
